~ Part Three ~ What are Collocations? ~ |
|
Collocations are words that occur in language in groups or chunks or phrases, but they occur
more often than by chance . In other words, collocations are not random. Idioms, sayings, compound
nouns, and all types of phrases are examples of collocations. Phrasal verbs are an especially frequent
form in language use existing under the wide umbrella of collocations. Therefore, they are offered in
abundance in the exercises above.
Collocations can be seen as a liberating approach to learning languages as they don¡¯t rely on strict
grammatical rules. Further, computers (originally programmed by us) have the ability to discover
collocations among the meta data on the web. We can identify what language forms specific groups of
people use on a regular basis pinpointing learner needs. This data also informs AI and will be more and
more accessible on the web.
What may be true is that while language is made up of various structures and collocations, it is also
the essence of communication and life as we know it. However you approach learning a language,
Good old-fashioned sweat, consistent effort, and a healthy sense of humor will surely take you to your goal.
